Good loot is hard to come by in 99 Nights in the Forest, with some of the best items mainly being attainable through chests. Even though the map is randomly generated, knowing what areas to look for can help you consistently find chests in every run.
In this guide, we'll be going through every single type of chest in the game, where and how to find them, and a quick summary of what you can get from each one!
There are two different categories of chests in the game: Classic and Event. The latter ones can only be found if a specific event spawned in your run, and they aren't guaranteed to show up unless you use event-related Flames. Let's go over the classic chests first, as they will always spawn somewhere on the map.
Classic Chests
Chest Name | Rarity |
|---|---|
Common | Common |
Good | Common |
Iron | Common |
Legendary | Uncommon |
Gold | Rare |
Ruby | Very Rare |
Diamond | N/A |
Common Chest

Common chests are the first ones you will find, and you'll spot them immediately after upgrading to a level 2 campfire. You'll usually find them in towers, houses, campsites, and even the cave where you rescue the first child.
They can contain the following items:
- Good Axe
- Good Sack
- Old Flashlight
- Old Rod
- Revolver
- Spear
- Bandage
- Flower Seeds
- Firefly Seeds
- Fuel Canister
- A Diamond
Good Chest

Good chests can be found in areas that you unlock with a level 2 and 3 campfire. They're mostly found in the same places you would find a common one, but they are more likely to appear the further you are from your base.
These can appear in the second child's cave, as well as ritual sites, plane crashes, and playgrounds.
They can contain the following items:
- Spear
- Leather Body
- Revolver
- Good Axe
- Good Sack
- Old Rod
- Berry Seeds
- Fuel Canister
- A Diamond
Iron Chest

Iron chests typically show up in areas unlocked with a level 3 or 4 campfire. They appear in similar places as the last two, but are only more common in deeper areas.
They can contain the following items:
- Revolver
- Rifle
- Leather Body
- Strong Flashlight
- Spear
- Good Sack
- Fuel Canister
- Flower Seeds
- Spikes
- Spear
- A Diamond
Legendary Chest

Much like the previous ones, they can appear in similar places but with a much lower chance. They are more common in areas unlocked by a level 5 campfire, as well as Cultist bases and labs.
They can contain the following items:
- Iron Body
- All seeds (Flower, Chili, and Berry)
- Strong Axe
- Giant Sack
- Oil Barrel
- Medkit
- Bear Trap
- A Diamond
Gold Chest

Gold chests are commonly found in the deepest parts of the map, which become accessible with a maxed out campfire. They'll often show up in pretty much any point of interest at the edges of the map, though they can very rarely spawn near your base.
They can contain the following items:
- Iron Body
- Strong Axe
- Giant Sack
- Strong Flashlight
- Medkit
- Barbed Wire
- Oil Barrel
- Morningstar
- Cultist Gem
- Gem of the Forest Fragment

Ruby Chest

Ruby chests are extremely rare and can be found in any location where a chest can spawn on the map, regardless of how far/near it is to your base. They have a very distinct scaly surface, and they contain some of the best non-event items in the game.
They are a guaranteed reward after clearing a Cultist Stronghold, which means you can get one every 20-30 minutes as well.
One important thing to note is that only one player can loot a ruby chest, and they will turn into a gold chest for everybody else after being opened.
They can contain the following items:
- Tactical Shotgun
- Kunai
- Chainsaw
- Thorn Body
- Riot Shield
- Gem of the Forest Fragment
Diamond Chest

Finally, diamond chests can only be found as a reward for clearing the Cultist Stronghold. It grants you 5 diamonds, and it will respawn whenever the stronghold refreshes. They don't appear anywhere else.
Event Chests
Event or "Exclusive" chests are technically all rare as they can only appear if certain conditions that are (mostly) out of your control are met. Let's go over each of them in detail, so you know exactly how and when they can be found.
Alien Chest

Alien chests can be found in the Mothership, which is only accessible if the Alien Event spawns on night 3. Check the crashed UFOs around the map until you find one that has a portal to the Mothership, then clear all of the enemies in each hallway.
At the end, you will find an Alien chest close to the exit portal. It can contain one of the following items:
- Ray Gun
- Laser Cannon
- Alien Armour
- Laser Sword
Ice Chest

The Ice chest can only be found in the Snow Biome, which has a relatively small chance of spawning somewhere on the map. Specifically, these chests only appear in the following points of interest:
- Polar Bear Caves: The small caves full of hostile polar bears will contain one Ice chest.
- Ice Temple: One Ice chest will always spawn in the second floor of the large temple that always spawns in this biome.
To open these chests, you must first use your axe to break the ice surrounding them. After that, you will get one of the following items:
- Ice Sword
- Ice Axe
- Frozen Shuriken
- Fuel Canister
- A Diamond
Cold Chest

Cold chests are found in most of the structures that spawn in the Snow Biome. You must first break the ice surrounding them before they can be opened.
They can contain the following items:
- Ice Axe
- Leather Body
- Snowball
- Fuel Canister
- A Diamond
Hot Chest

Hot chests are found all around the Volcanic Biome. Look in and on top of structures, towers, pits, or even lava pools.
They can contain the following items:
- Wildfire
- Crossbow
- Lava Mine
- Sacrifice Totem
- Leather Body
- Revolver
Infernal Chest

Infernal chests are the redder and spikier versions of the Hot chests, and they are also found in the Volcanic Biome. They can only appear in these locations:
- Volcanic Church: The chest will spawn somewhere on the roof, which will require some parkour to reach. Act quick after opening it, as the item it drops can fall into lava.
- The Furnace: An Infernal chest can also be found in The Furnace, which is the factory-like structure in the biome.
They can contain the following items:
- Infernal Sword
- Infernal Crossbow
- Infernal Sack
Vine Chest

Vine chests can be found in the Jungle Biome, specifically within the large trap-ridden temples that spawn there. They are often found near the crystal skulls underground.
They can contain the following items:
- Blowpipe
- Crossbow
- Poison Spear
- Good Axe
- Good Sack
- Strong Flashlight
- Medkit
Jungle Chest

Jungle chests are found in the basement of the Mother Temple, which is often at the center of the Jungle Biome. To gain access to this basement, you will need to gather 4 crystal skulls from the jungle.
They can contain the following items:
- Poison Claws
- Poison Armor
Frog Chest

The Frog chest can be found in the Frog Cave, and it can only be opened after clearing all enemy waves that spawn there. Access to the cave will require the Frog Invasion event, and you'll need to find 8 Frog Keys via fishing before you can enter the cave.
They can contain the following items:
- Poison Armor
- Poison Spear
- Blowdart
- Frog Boots
Obsidiron Chest

Obsidiron chests are unique in that you can't find them on the map. Instead, you must craft and place them in your base.
You can only create Obsidiron chests if the Meteor Event spawns in your game. This will replace the workshop with a special Meteor Tool Workshop.
You will need 10 Meteor Shards, 5 Gold Shards, and 3 Obsidiron Ingots to craft an Obsidiron chest, and you can obtain these materials by mining meteor chunks all around the map. To create ingots, you have to drop Obsidiron ore in lava first, and then toss it into water to create an Obsidiron Ingot.
Once you have all the necessary materials, place them all on the anvil in the Meteor Tool Workshop to create the chest blueprint, then plop it down in your base.
They can contain the following items:
- Obsidiron Hammer
- Obsidiron Body
Spooky Chest

Spooky chests can only be found in the Hedge Maze, which appears whenever the Carnival Event is active. To gain access to the maze, you must first win 3 minigames in the carnival, which will get you enough tickets to open the entrance.
Once inside, you can find Spooky chests in the dead ends, and there are a maximum of four spread out in the maze. They look like common chests, but with a gold lock and corners.
They can contain the following items:
- Candy Apple
- Candy Corn
- Cotton Candy
- Pumpkin Pie
- Potion
- Candies (only in Halloween)
Vampire Chest

Unlike the Spooky chests, Vampire chests always show up at the end of the Hedge Maze. All you need to do is make it to the end and open the chest to claim your rewards.
They can contain the following items:
- Scythe
- Vampire Cloak
- Bouncing Blade
