The Halibut Harpoon is one of the best rods in Fisch, sometimes even eclipsing the coveted Olympian Godbreaker. As such, getting it is incredibly difficult, to the point where it isn't even required for the Masterline Rod.
In this guide, we'll help you through every step of the Halibut Harpoon quest chain, and we'll give you a few tips on how to finish it as quickly as humanly possible.
How to Start the Halibut Harpoon Quest
IMPORTANT: You must be at least level 1,000 before you can start the quest!
To begin, you must first visit Dr. Monty's Lab in The Deep. If you need help gaining access to that zone, we have an in-depth guide on how to enter The Deep in Fisch.
You can find his lab in the far north, at the Outer Deep where Beacon 1P-2 is located. Enter the window behind the Cartographer.

Once inside, talk to Dr. Monty to start the Halibut Harpoon questline.

Answers to Dr. Monty's Questions
Before the quest officially begins, Dr. Monty will insist that you answer three questions first. Here are the correct answers so you can avoid getting punished:
# | Question | Correct Answer |
|---|---|---|
1 | The goggobites gather for what? | Hubbbermistchen |
2 | What is the value of a Sparkling Shiny Aether Pufferfish? | 16,736.03 C$ |
3 | What is my favorite color? | Orange...? |
Quest #1 - Pufferfish Abroad
NOTE: While doing the first couple of quests, try to complete Daily & Weekly Challenges to try and get a Nuke. This will be important at the final stretch of the questline.
For your first real task, Dr. Monty will ask for different types of Pufferfish (10 of each variant). In the table below, we'll show you where and how to catch all the required variants:
Fish | Location | Preferences | Extra Tips |
|---|---|---|---|
Pufferfish | Ocean | Season: Summer | Easy to catch in the surrounding waters of Roslit Bay |
Flying Pufferfish | Above the Clouds | Season: Summer | Make sure you have a rod long enough to fish there, or use a harpoon |
Blight Pufferfish | Toxic Grove | Bait: Weird Algae | Don't forget to equip the Gas Mask |
Pufferflute | Crystal Cove | Weather: Clear | N/A |
Pyrite Pufferfish | Mariana's Veil - Volcanic Vents | Time: Night | You need to do an obby to reach the fishing area |
Carrot Pufferfish | Carrot Garden | Weather: Rain | In case you didn't know, the Carrot Garden is accessed via the Mushgrove Swamp |
Mustard | Ocean | Weather: Rain | Simply maximize your luck and fish in the open ocean |
Once you're done, return to Dr. Monty to start the next part of the quest chain.

Quest #2 - Collect My Pufferfish
You'll now be tasked with collecting even more Pufferfish. This time, it's a long list of different mutated variants of the regular Pufferfish (10 for each mutation).
IMPORTANT: All 10 of each mutation must be a Perfect Catch, further adding to the already difficult challenge.
For this part, you can stick to Roslit Bay. Use a Fish Radar to find the exact spot of the Pufferfish abundance.

It's an exhaustive list that you can complete in Roslit Bay, granted you have the required rods. Here are all the details for each mutation:
Mutation | Ideal Rod | Extra Tips |
|---|---|---|
Wrath | Rod of the Zenith | Dead Man's Rod can also be used |
Rotting | Splitbranch Twig | N/A |
Exploded | The Boom Ball | N/A |
Lost | The Lost Rod | N/A |
Celestial | Celestial Rod | Activating the Celestial status effect (which grants the mutation) requires you to use this rod to catch 15 fish first |

Crystalized | N/A | |
Heavenly | Heaven's Rod | We have a guide on how to get the Heaven's Rod if you don't have it yet |

Atlantean | A Trident Striker harpoon can be used as well | |
Lunar | Moonlit Rod | N/A |
Lucid | Lucid Rod | N/A |
TIP: The Mutated Sharky companion may help increase the chances for mutations in general.
After completing the long list of mutated Pufferfish, return to Dr. Monty and brace yourself for the next challenge.
Quest #3 - Intermission Time
You get a bit of time to rest after that exhaustive list, as the next quest simply asks you to wait 5 hours. Return to Dr. Monty once enough time has passed.

Quest #4 - Pufferfish Electric Boogaloo
Upon starting Pufferfish Electric Boogaloo, you'll be given yet another long list of mutated Pufferfish that you must collect. Again, each mutation must also be a Perfect Catch.
In the table below, we'll go through what mutations you need, how many Pufferfish you need to catch for each variant, and which rods are the best to use:
GENERAL TIP: Use Carrot Sticks for bait when using rods with low mutation rates (e.g. Duskwire).

Shady | 10 | Shady Rod | N/A |
Spirit | 5 | Spiritbinder | N/A |
Blue Moon | 2 | Any rod | Can only be done during a Blue Moon weather event |
Putrid | 1 | Any rod | Requires the Putrid enchantment |

When you finally complete this long list, return to Dr. Monty once again.
Quest #5 - 500 Pufferfih!
Upon returning to Dr. Monty, he'll reward you with a Restricted Halibut Harpoon. You'll need to use it to Perfect Catch 500 Pufferfish to complete this part of the quest chain.
You can buy Carrot Sticks from Dr. Monty to help you finish this faster. Each piece costs only 56 C$, and you can buy up to a thousand in one go.
Once more, return to Roslit Bay and equip the Halibut Harpoon to start chipping away at the massive quest objective.

Quest #6 - The Final Hoard
After Perfect Catching 500 Pufferfish, Dr. Monty will ask you to collect one last set of mutated Pufferfish. This time, these mutations have an equal 20% chance using the Halibut Harpoon.
Equip your Restricted Halibut Harpoon and go back to the Pufferfish spot one last time. You only need to Perfect Catch the following:
- 25 Bathyal Pufferfish
- 25 Thalassic Pufferfish
- 25 Hadal Pufferfish

Permanently Unlocking the Halibut Harpoon
Finally, the last step after that long and arduous quest chain is to pay Dr. Monty 50,000,000 C$. Afterwards, you are officially done with the Halibut Harpoon questline.
You should now have the unrestricted version of the Halibut Harpoon, which can be used as either a rod or a harpoon gun. To switch modes, simply press Q on your keyboard.

Congratulations, you now have one of the best rods in Fisch!
